Spotlight: Oh… the Political Vomit.

By October 4, 2012All Posts, Spotlight Series

You wake up… complete your morning routine of brushing teeth, getting the boy to school, and grab a cup of coffee… You sit, just for a few minutes, before the next set of children need to be awake.  Press the on button, wait with excited hesitation, and feel the sigh of the let down when you log onto the FB, and people… all at once… have projectile vomited political smatterings across the wall.  It’s a little bit of a disappointment.

As you can guess, I’m not much of a political officianado… nor will I ever claim to be.  And it’s not that I don’t care… I just go about it differently.  Rather than sling mud, degrade, name-call, and disrespect our elected officials, I choose to pray for them.  We are supposed to be submissive to authority… always respectful… always prayerful.  That doesn’t mean you have to agree with them on every issue… or even any issue, if that is the case.

As a Christian, I find it difficult to ‘choose a side’.  It’s my belief that Jesus was neither Republican, nor Democrat.  He was not on the left or the right.  He was on the straight and narrow.  He didn’t veer to one side or the other, noting the offenses of others.  He simply prayed for them… and loved them.  ALL of them… not just the people that were in His crowd… financial bracket, social status.  And He loved them with an unwavering find of love.  One that breaks all political boundaries… one that gets them to the Father.

Doesn’t the Bible (God’s Word) teach us to show the Love of Christ?  To mimic, as well as we can, the steps of the One who Gave it ALL… be His hands and feet?  And to not let any slander befall our mouths?

Bible Back-up

“Obey your leaders and submit to their authority.  They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.  Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.” ~Hebrews 13:17

“Remind the people to be be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceful and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.”  ~Titus 3:1-2

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.  The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgement on themselves.  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.  Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?  Then do what is right and he will commend you.”  ~Romans 13:1-3

“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone– for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. ~1 Timothy 2:1-2

“Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor on another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” ~Romans 12:9-12

I’m sure this will not be the most popular post I’ve written, and I’m good with that.  That being said, I have had my political say, and now I lay it down… at His feet… to Work, to Do, and to Be exactly what the Lord intends it to be.

May all of those in authority seek humility, counsel, and wisdom from the Lord.  May God be generous with the knowledge He gives, and may the recipients of this knowledge be grateful for having it.  May generosity of heart, and MaddLove flow from those who are given earthly power.  In Jesus’ name.
